Here, the healthiest beverage powerhouses:

1. Pomegranate juice
2. Red wine
3. Concord grape juice
4. Blueberry juice
5. Black cherry juice
6. Açaí juice
7. Cranberry juice
8. Orange juice
9. Tea
10. Apple juice

On a related note, this post in living.health.com – http://living.health.com/2008/06/30/hypertension-diabetes/ – linked inflammation to leaky gut to damaged insulin and blood vessel relaxing receptors to high blood pressure andtype 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, etc…

Antioxidants found in the fruits mentioned above should be our front line of defense against inflammation. These fruits and other fruits/veggies make up a large part of the Mediterranean type diet to reduce inflammation naturally – http://healthhabits.wordpress.com/2008/05/30/mediterranean-diet-prevents-type-2-diabetes/

If you ever reviewed the health benefits from Blood Orange Juice you will be pleasantly suprised to discover that Blood Oranges contain up to 40 % higher Vitamin C levels- anti oxidants such as flavones (hesperedin, narirutin) and hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, cumaric, ferulic, and sinapic)Cyanidin-3-O-b-glycoside(C3G)and delphinidin-3-glucoside, whose metabolism and bioavailability from red orange juice has been demonstrated ,are the main anthocyanins present in juice of pigmented oranges and responsible for their red brilliant color. There are numerous studies showing the amazing benefit this fruit provides. There is a new company selling this product in the NYC area called IO-(Italian Organics) in 16 oz single servings. Tell your grocer to ask their distributor for this product. Drink to your health !!

Was the study done on a specific antioxidant or the overall content value? Tea has a range of antioxidants that would vary based on tea type i.e., white, black, green, oolong. I wonder what type was used in the study and if they used brewed, whole leaf teas, bagged teas (lower quality) or extracts? All of these factors would greatly impact the results.
Based on the fact that orange juice is higher than tea I tend to believe that it was a specific variety of antioxidant that they were measuring not overall value. teasetc.com

Just wondering why Black Currant was not on our list .They are grown here in the US and have higher antioxident levels then pomegranates and blueberries. You should try some juice .

  • Maj

Having antioxidants doesn’t make a beverage better for you than another beverage. In fact, it could be said that this article is totally false because the healthiest beverage is water.

Also, to ‘xocolate:’ Cacao isn’t a beverage, and I’m not interested in your website but thanks.

Allyn: Blackcurrant is very popular in Japan but it’s not popular in the US because growers of blueberries and pomegranates don’t want you to know it’s good for you and tastes delicious, because it would affect their sales of blueberries and pomegranates. That’s why you almost never see anything with blackcurrant flavoring or extracts in any American products but if you go to the Asian grocery there are lots of products that contain them.

  • maeio grajrda

how much of the pomergranate do i drink daily?

  • Eli

Where is Goji Berry/Mangosteen/Noni on this listing….which I drink daily in a combined formula!?

  • Gringo

Please check your facts before stating that blackcurrants have a higher antioxidant value than blueberries. The ORAC valuation is viewed as the benchmark for antioxydant determination (Google it). Blueberries – especially WILD Blueberries – definitely have a higher ORAC than blackcurrants. That said, I agree that blackcurrants are delicious in any product that requires an added sweetener (such as juices & jams), otherwise it is considered as being too bitter to be consumed fresh, unlike blueberries. This is especially true for the North American taste. In Europe, they are more accepting of the blackberry’s tart flavor, which is why this fruit is indeed more popular in Europe.

  • Heidi

This list is incorrect. Someone needs to do their research and why isn’t AOL concerned about posting incorrect information online?

Shouldn’t WATER be on the list???

Great article! It’s always good to see emphasis on nutrition. I would like to see the comparison chart for the nutrients for each drink in the article, ( as well as some of the other drinks commented on ) My preference is a blend of several juices ( some that aren’t listed here) and extracts that balances the list of available antioxidants and other nutrients.

On the contrar Maj, a beverage having antioxidents does make it better for you. And yes, it could be said that this article is totally false and the healthiest beverage is water, but just because you said it does not mean that its true. Just a little education for you.

And,,, you can grow your own Pomegranate bush/tree… they are very popular and easy to grow here in the Southwest, they bear lots of fruit, don’t take a lot of water, and are a pretty plant.

DRINK WHATEVER YOU WANT. THE PEOPLE WHO NEED THESE ANTIOXIDANTS ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIABETES, ETC AND CANNOT DRINK THEM BECAUSE OF THE SUGAR CONTENT. Being a sometimes tea drinker, I will research this on the web, to find out what color of tea is best for us. So many types out there, and all I use is plain old Lipton, steeped heavily. I do not think that is the best type, for sure. Thank for sparking my interest.

believe any wine is a good disease fighter. I have been drinking 2 glasses of white wine every night with dinner for years now and my blood test for all my levels are excellent and not just within range. I swear by it. I sleep well which also fights off disease and have the energy to workout 90 minutes a day. but it is the white wine that fights a good fight.

  • RLS

Hi read your list with much interest and I think these kinds of test have some merit. About 15 yrs ago I was watching a TV program and they had an older lady that explained that she had been juicing black cherry’s and drinking a glass every day and it helped her arthritis in her hands and deminstrated how well her hands worked. I found that health food stores have it “pure” and started consuming a glass a day and could not believe how it helped particularly my spine I could actually stand straight with very little to no pain ,as a side benefit my fingers actually became more flexible . I now get my Black Cherry juice from “Puritans Pride” I buy a case at a time for price reduction $$. RLS

To date, most juice brands have made claims of anti-oxidant strength but not substantiated the marketing promise. The first juice to have the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capaity) measured for the contents of the juice is the Montmorency Cherry juice called Cherrish. On the superfruit front, the Montmorency Cherry is clearly super with more than 8,000 ORAC units per bottle as measured by the patented process developed by Brunswick Labs and the Department of Agriculture. CHERRish, a 100 percent all natural fruit juice that exclusively uses and sources Montmorency cherries is the first ready to drink beverage to certify its antioxidant level on every bottle, informing consumers of the antioxidant strength of what they are drinking. Brunswick Labs, an independent, full-service bio-analytical laboratory specializing in the science of antioxidants and oxidative stress, tested CHERRish and gave their Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) certification, which is now clearly marked on every bottle.

Until all juices adopt a common measurement for antioxidant strength, the comparison of health benefits for antioxidants is just that – a conversation. Don’t be mislead by what the “fruit” antioxidant rating may be. You need to know what the “contents” of the bottled juice are which may be substaintially different.

  • Ken

Interesting to see wine in the list. Obviously good in moderate quantities… I guess the rule has to be moderate in everything. Sure all kind of juice are healthy, but one needs to be careful with the sugar content. Moderation is the key.

One important factor left out in all these discussions and blogs about health are your GENES

How much can genes make a difference?

For me every morning after brushing my teeth.
I pop on a pair of my favorite genes

Strauss jeans. They really do make a difference

    Fido

  • Jack

Our family is vegetarian and my wife and I are borderline vegan. We juice FRESH juices every morning, which are far better for you than anything that is in a bottle (therefore pasteurized or “flash” pasteurized). If you look at the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Abosorbancy Capacity) content of raw berries, etc., they are far higher BEFORE they are pasteurized in a drink. The MASTER antioxidant isn’t a berry or a juice anyway, it is glutathione— produced by the body. When ingested via health food store products, it is virtually destroyed in the stomach. There is a breakthrough product with a compositional patent that is clinically proven to increase your OWN body’s glutathione levels 292% in just 2 months (average).

  • Chris

Everyone should be on MONAVIE….highest and best benefits all around – it is causing people to eliminate drugs that they may have been taking for a whole host of annoying ailments…both young and old individuals, athletes, housewives and people who care about their future as healthy individuals.

    • Donna Mc

While Mona Vie is great juice, who can afford 40 bucks a bottle? Putting it in a bottle that looks like a wine bottle is a nice touch. The amount of money spent on that I could get all kinds of healthy food and juice at the health food store. Mona Vie is incredibly overpriced. That is all I will say, except that I do not like their company either-MLM. I can get my antioxidants and not go to the poor house on the way. Yes, I have done a 2 month trial of using Mona Vie. Like I said there is nothing wrong with the juice , it is the cost. And, I already know the spiel about it being “superior in quality”, but everyone says their product is superior, especially in ths expanding juice market. So, that means nothing.

  • taylor

BTW Fruta Vida is an MLM and not available at the grocery store. The Acai in this study is very different than the Acai in Monavie. Commericially available acai juice is typically very poor quality. The Acai in Monavie is meticulously processed and retains almost 100% of its nutritional value. Check out the published study in the Journal of Agricultural Nutrition about OptiAcai (the product in Monavie). When choosing a concentrated juice product you better know where the fruit is coming from and is it free of all pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. These fruits from Asia, especially China, are notorious for being contaminated with large amounts of toxic pesticides.

Is pomegranate juice loaded with antioxidants than antioxidant water?

  • topperwood

    monavie = pyramid scheme.

    • anon2004

topperwood, you need to educate yourself on what a pyramid scheme actually is. That is a business that pays people to simply sign other people up, and it’s illegal in this country. Companies that do it are shut down quickly by the FTC or attorney generals. Just because some network marketing companies pay most of the compensation to the people at the top doesn’t make it a pyramid scheme. (I’m not in MonaVie, btw, but I am opposed to those who are uneducated on a subject putting incorrect labels on something.)

  • full picture

All companies that sell a product are going to tell you the facts that best support their products. When looking at the value of a fruit or vegetable you need to look at the full picture of what the health benefits are. There are four different tests for measuring antioxidant potency: Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC); total oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC); free radical scavenging capacity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH); and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It is important to test antioxidant functionality – inhibition of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation by peroxides and malondialdehyde methods. As well as evaluate the total polyphenol content [by gallic acid equivalents (GAEs)] of polyphenol. Saying that your product has the highest ORAC value does not make it the healthiest product around. For more info see this recent test. Sure it is by Pomwonderful, but let see what other studies show when looking at a more complete picture of how a fruit or beverage can be good for us. Red wine is still the cheapest if you are on a budget and we all need to drink water to clean out toxins from our bodies…

  • Don

I love these pseudo self-medicators. I am assuming that ALL the people who are taking these add-ons to their diet have had a full analysis of their blood, heart etc to determine which of the specific ‘anti-oxidants’ are “best” for them. Without doing so you can be doing yourself harm and just lining the pockets of modern day snake oil merchants. My favourite is the nonsense about Glutathione. Just check out Wikipedia regarding this.

Me? I simply eat well, eat varied, and do not excess on too many things. Neither do I worry about these mystical/magical ‘anti-oxidants’. Good grief people. Hve you actually studied the studies themselves? Are they biased in any way? Who paid for the research? etc You should do your own research before believing in potentially bad/loaded research.

  • Gwendolyn

    what about homemade wine?

  • Dan

Guys….. could it be that most of these fruits, juices, etc., have value? And likely we will continue discovering more over time. A great side benefit to these that should be examined is that many of the beneficials that are being “discovered” grow right here in our own backyard. Which means they are of importance in the attempts to create a more sustainable agriculture, (shipping long distances is not part of that scenario), save on this planets fossil fuel consumption, and create niches for small farms to create value added products. We here in the US have all the listed to choose from, as well as the serviceberry, black cap raspberry and more. I’ve looked at all these fruits and the truth seems to be that they all can help, and what’s wrong with that? And, of course being able to consume things unprocssed will always be the best, but it’s not practical for a great many, so frozen or processed becomes the default. In the end, adding some good to your diet, is better than none or very little. And oh yeah, exercise is big time in boosting your overall health, especially “fun” exercise. Go outside and play! (it’s cold and frozen today in maine, so I’m go out the back door and going cross country skiing) Live and laugh, it’s all too short anyway!

I want to make a comment on the comments.
Everyone needs to remember that this is ONE study. as a person, who helped with initial pahses of this web site, at least half of the comments have no businees here. I research bogus cures, “mostly for RLS and sleep disorders. this is not the palce for people to be posting their bogus web sites, etc. Every list you read is going to be differnt, but have some similarities. This is a n ice web site, and the flaming going on has me very concerned and upset. I was wondering how long it would take for this to start happening. In the end we all know that we read and reasearch, and you take away fromi t things that will help you. Some of these comments SHOULD be deleted. the screening process needs an update.

I agree that these Monavie products are just part of the MKM marketing scams that are penetrating the internet. this is not the place to be advertising thes products that you are going to make money off of. Of course, all the info on these sites are goi9ng to produce”evidence” that their product is the ONLY one that will work for you. This is so untrue. Please comment on the article on this web site instead of blatantly trying to solicit. Very uncool!

  • ILGF

    I am totally confused..!

  • Christine

What is Donna MC talking about? She came out of the blu. Her comments do not have anything to do with this discussion. I’m with ILGF. . .totally confused. Listening to everyone. . .what product do you choose and who do you believe?

  • Donna Mc

This is for Christine. Good Afternoon. The offensive comments and shameless plugging of web sites have been removed. I talked with the publishers, and they were not aware of all the comments coming in that were pushing one certain product in order to sell it. My comments now look lie they have nothing to do with the discussion, because all the comments that I was commenting on are gone. Now, it is a real discussion about antioxidants, and not a list of web sites to take your hard earned money. There was one web site in particular that kept popping up, and all of those references are gone. This is not a place to sell things, and that was the point of my comments. sorry for any confusion. :o)
I was talking about multi level marketing companies; while not illegal, are not a great way to do business, that’s all, and they have no place on this web site. :o)
cheers to all, and wherever you get your antioxidants, they are very good for you. I lvoe eating pomegranates, even though it takes time and patience. LOL Yummy!

  • Donna Mc

I take it back what I said in my previous post.
There are still a few posts here for a multi level marketing company. if you becme a distributor you get a discount, etc. You have to sell it to other people, then they have to sell to other people, etc. Other people have made the same comments that I have. MLM companies are something I avoid like the plague. I have had much experience in dealing with these companies, and they are not interested in your health at all, but it is more about the money. Do your research. This is my opinion, but you will see that I am not alone in this if you go over the other comments. My comments did not just come out of the blue.
Sorry, but it is true.have you checked out the hard sell tactics?

  • Mike Mc

    Donna Mc:
Did you fail at MLM? Is that why you’re so cynical? Not all MLM companies are scams, unethical or bad. MLM is just one type of marketing. One MLM company in particular markets a premium beverage with the purest form of acai berry, plus other healthy berries/fruits. It is super high in antioxidants, and many experts/athletes/nutritionists/scientists rave about it. The company could have marketed the juice in the stores and had a celebrity on TV tell you to buy it, and you probably would have joyfully bought. What’s the difference? This particular company is indeed a business, and they were able to get their product to market much faster and more efficiently through MLM…. that’s just smart business. Such MLM distributors are also consumers. If they didn’t love the product themselves, they wouldn’t be in the business. Understand first before you spread prejudices. (I’m purposefully not disclosing the name of the product/company because I’m not trying to sell it here. But if you try it, you may find that you love it…. and then you’ll want to be a MLM distributor because you will get paid for your marketing efforts…. there’s nothing wrong with that.)

I take Pomegranate daily for its amazing nutritional benefits. I don’t drink the juice or eat the fruit every day, so I include a natural supplement. I use a formula called LycoPom by New Chapter. Lycopom is an organic, whole food supplement that provides the nutrition of 15 whole pomegranates per capsule. There is also an informative article called “Lycopene, Pomegranate and Cancer Prevention” that describes the amazing benefits of pomegranate.
