Some of you are making the same mistake the article makes. We are not chemistry lab beakers. Throw away your calorie counter. Calories in/out is not a logical approach. Your health will not be the same whether you get 1000 calories in vegetables or 1000 in potato chips. Sugar locks fat into your body, so that chocolate chip cookie affects your health and weight in ways a calorie count cannot identify. (I'm not defending frozen yogurt; it may have sugar and the freezing may destroy the benefits of normal yogurt.)

Ignore vague terms like "carbs", and even "sugar". Fruits have a sugar called fructose, and in fruits, it's good for you. Refined sugar is poison. White bread is terrible for you, while whole grains are good: but they're both "carbs", right? The fat in avocados and nuts is good for you, but the fat in red meat (beyond a couple bites a day) is not... and lean meat is not necessarily better -- there are other issues with that.

If you want to improve your health, get your sleep and water. Eat heartily in the morning, moderately at lunch, and sparingly for dinner.

Most American get far too much protein. High protein is a short-term weight loss strategy that can do long-term damage to your heart and bones.

If you're on a diet and your spouse is shoving junk food in your face, there are other issues: the spouse is sabotaging your diet intentionally. S/he may be insecure about your relationship or him/herself.

Excercise. Find a variety of exercises so it doesn't get boring. I like the idea about brain work during exercise.

In sum, don't fight evolution, embrace it.

Maybe you need to pick up the pace of exercise. You are young, and the recommendations for cardio workouts would be 30-60 minutes a day 3-5 days a week. Are you working out within your heart rate training zone? Have you tried interaval training? Have you tried resistance training? All of these will help rev your body to burn calories. And remember, calories in equal calories out.You may want to consult a personal trainer .

My husband and I started our diet in August of last year, so 6 months ago. So far, he has lost 30 pounds (he is 5'9" and now 165) and I 20 pounds (5'5" and now 147). What we have done is cut way back on our portions, started taking our dog for daily walks, and, used Wii Fit as a guide for exercise. It was very difficult to eat as little as we did when we first started, having been so used to eating so heartily before. After awhile, your stomach shrinks and now if I tried to eat as much as I used to, I would seriously not feel very good. We eat whatever we want but in much smaller portions. I think if I wanted to lose the last 10 pounds that I want to though, I would probably have to eat healthier.

I just wanted to testify that it can be done! I love foods that are bad for you too, and you can have them, you just can't have that much!

I'm 22 and I have 2 children, a 2 yr old and a 1 yr old. My pre-pregnancy weight was 150 now i am 195. I've been trying everything to try and lose weight from my last pregnancy for over a year now. I work full time were I am constantly on my feet walking and lifting 50lb cases of liquor. Nothing seems to help. I've tried most diet pills/plans. I've been doing cardio and some light lifting at home as well. I have cut out soda, sugary snacks and most fatty foods. Is there anything you can suggest I do.

Hi all. I am a 31 year old female, 5'2", 110 pounds. I have never been overweight. Congrats to everyone who is working hard to lose weight. I always see these blogs and wanted to share my secret to being and staying skinny. Portion control. Limit desserts to a treat once or twice a wek. Lots of water. Never drink soda - only as an occassional treat. Exercise. Three meals a day. Three snacks a day. Calorie awareness - know how much you should eat and be aware of how much you are eating each day - you don't have to obsess to the last calorie. Only eat fast food once a month - one item off the dollar menu. Never eat fried foods - maybe once a year. Treat meat like its a side dish. These are all good habits formed at a young age and carried into adulthood. Learn them so you can teach them to your kids and they can be healthy too! Good Luck!
