America’s Healthiest Restaurants: How We Ranked Them

america-healthiest

To zero in on the healthiest restaurants, we separated national chains that offer sit-down service from those that have primarily counter or fast service and scored each group based on criteria from our expert panel.

Out of the 43 sit-down and 53 fast-service chains that we initially looked at, those that did not provide any nutritional information were automatically eliminated and not listed here (maybe next year, Cheesecake Factory!). The rest were judged on healthy food preparation; the availability of organic or hormone-free foods; whole grains on the menu; limited or no trans-fats in all dishes; low-sodium options; healthy beverages; and portion control; as well as how easily you, the customer, can access nutritional information—so you know exactly what you’re getting in your spaghetti and meatballs.

Editor’s Note: We apologize for not posting the entire list of restaurants that were initially considered. Because this piece originally appeared in Health magazine with space restraints, we chose to only publish those sit-down dining and fast-food establishments that made the top (and a few at the bottom) of our list. Thank you for your feedback, and we will keep this in mind when we compile our next America’s Healthiest ranking.

I am having a similar experience to Linda. I am unable to access the restaurants rated as you stated. I am a health care provider and interested. I was a subscriber to Sunset last year and have considered subscribing again. This frustrating experience has not enticed me to do that. Can you help me access this information. I look forward to hearing from you with specific helpful instructions.

I’m glad to see I am not the only one having a problem getting to this information. Don’t you realize, it’s not nice to promise and then make it impossible to learn anymore?

  • Lloyd Rauschkolb

This is the way things are done today. Promise this, but sell you that! It is just bait and switch.

click on restaurants at the end of the “also tagged” list. It is there that you will find the list.

  • william

We’re down to 107 left. I was told to report to conference room Sequoia and when I did, I found that the 200 people there are all research guinea pigs. Now I’m one. Are goal is to find those restaurants you mention. The price for failure is death. Because of my last name, I’m kind of far back but I see my colleagues being snuffed one by one. There are/were 107 in front of me…now only 106. When it’s my turn and I can’t find your restaurants, they will kill me. I have a wife and two children. Who will support them after I’m gone? You ruined my life!!!

  • Nadine

    Like everyone else…where’s the list????????

  • Kim C

I can’t find the list either. It shouldn’t be this hard. You need to fire your webmaster. You’re making enemies — and no response from whoever this stupid website belongs to.
It’s no good to say it was there all the time and we just couldn’t find it — it should be easy to find.
I will recommend a book to read for whoever is in charge of your website (the boss, not the programmer). It’s called “The Inmates are Running the Asylum” by Alan Cooper. It’s about why computers don’t need to be as hard to use as they are. Read it.

  • Kim C

Hey — I found it! Go back to the main article and click on the first blue line at the bottom — I think it says “Our list of the best casual dining spots”.
Whoo-hoo! Sure it should have been obvious — but it obviously wasn’t to a lot of people.

Please help me find the list. I have so many food allergies and finding any restaurant I can eat at is hard. Maybe if I had the list, I’d have a better chance of finding a place I could eat out at instead of trying to satisfy my need for food here at home.

  • mo

interesting findings. i worked at p.f. chang’s for almost 7 years and yes, we served healthy, tasty food! i still eat there regularly and always will.
HOWEVER, the cliche that ‘if it tastes amazing then it must be bad for you’ is still true in this case. research what ingredients are included in the recipe and don’t assume that a chicken dish is healthy just because it’s chicken.
again, PF Chang’s DOES have a variety of “good for you” dishes and their ingredients are always fresh, you just have to know which ones to order for your diet. happy eating, all! m.

Day 3: After several days of searching for the list of the 53 healthiest restaurants I am beginning to lose hope. Even worse, I am beginning to doubt the list’s existence entirely. My legs are weak and my eyelids are heavy, but I will continue onward… searching for that list.

  • Corrin

Heres the list (for everone still having issues) that I found:
    Uno Chicago Grill
    Souplantation & Sweet Tomatoes
    Mimi’s Cafe
    P.F. Chang’s China Bistro
    Bob Evans Restaurants
    Ruby Tuesday
    Romano’s Macaroni Grill
    Chevy’s Fresh Mex
    Olive Garden
    Denny’s

PS I read some of the comments on that page and they said that this list is a joke…Just FYI

  • Uma

  • Larry

    Worst article I have seen.

Headline “See how we ranked them”

Can we find the ranking?? No way, or it’s so well covered that we finally give up. We need some experts that want to share the story.

  • Roger

  • William

My advise to this set up is for everyone to note the name of the site and the writer and avoid them as if they were on the list of worst list providers

  • rhonda

OMG–The comments are more entertaining than the list. It is a shame that witty and intelligent people as such commented are having such a hard time, what about the common folk, the casual browsers, what hope have they? I could google it for faster results!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mike

Great subject and story if you could find the list.

  • ktdid

Click the blue link that says “fast food chains” for the list.

  • John Denver

Horrible horrible horrible website. How you manage to keep your heads up high with this awful menagerie of links and off-topic pages, is beyond me. Try making a simpler page with simple topics with simple articles. It really isn’t rocket science. Newspapers have been using this ‘genius’ technique for years, you should try reading them once in a while, perhaps it’d bring you up to spend, intellectually.

  • Ken K
  • Tonya

I dont see them! What a joke!

  • glen

this is crazy…..could have had a good workout while trying to find the list.

  • gary prater

You guys didn’t find it due to marketing skill of the programmer. You were sucked in to look at more of the site than you wanted to for the sake of the good ole dollar bill going into the palms of someone else.

  • Paul (Erie, PA)

There’s nothing worse than looking for a list that does not exist!

  • Maeg

    Where’s the list????

  • Chris

You teased with a ranking list which is impossible to reach (or maybe I just don’t have the time to sift and surf). An example of the TYPE of sites I don’t revisit (they need to be MORE intuitive and easy, or I’m off to something else). And I am. Sorry.

  • DB

Hardest lists to find in the USA:

    1. MSN.Com – Healthiest Restaurant List.

  • Abe

    duuuuuuh! where is the list?

  • Victoria

I agree with the others – attempting to play “hide & seek” with the information has turned me off to your marketing techniques AND your publication.

  • Katy

PEOPLE HAVE POSTED THE CORRECT LINK OR DIRECTIONS ON WHERE TO FIND IT… BUT THIS ONLY LEADS TO THE TOP 10– NOT THE ENTIRE LIST.

  • Arthur

    the list please….we’re WAITING

  • Katy

Oh, OK… I get it now. The problem lies with our reading comprehension folks!! They never promised to give us a list 43-53 restaurants long! They DID say they’d SIFTED THROUGH that many… and posted the best they’d found in two categories: sit-down (ten made the list) and fast-service chains (only five made the list). So go back up to the first paragraph of the article and click on the blue links that say SIT DOWN and FAST-SERVICE for your lists. That’s it! No conspiracy… no stupidity on the part of the website… just a bunch of us not reading the first few lines of the article carefully enough!! Duh.

  • Vianca

This is dumb! where’s the list?!?!?!?!

  • Terry

Let’s go to the greasy burger joint while we wait for the list.

  • Ivan B

  • Boca cat

How annoying, where is the list of restaurants. Why do you click and get a small article and not the list? Should be a list of not user friendly web sites!

  • trin

Good idea on how to get email addresses! :~)

  • Boca cat

For those that found it, great and thanks but this web-site sucks! Why do we have to search for a simple list they offered to us. I won’t bite again.

This article is like an election promise. Where’s the list???

  • Ivan B

I JUST POSTED THE LIST FOR US ABOVE… LOOK UP A LITTLE!!!

  • ray

click on the 43 sit down or click on the 53 service chains and poof there’s your list

  • BC

Your site is HORRIBLE. How about if you rank them, taunt everyone into reading the “fluff” by dangling the ranking, you actually show more than the top 5 out of 53……my first experiace with your site and you magazine….and my last. I am disappointed that MSN linked this article.

  • SC

I also cannot find the list but am VERY interested in seeing it! This always seems to happen with these types of headlines. Just list them in the artcile!

  • Bryan Curtis

Who ever wrot this article isn’t very good at giving out the list. Maybe fire that person for waisting everyones time.

  • melissa

I was having the same problem & just started clicking. If you go to the top of this page, above where it says, “Healthy Eating – Dining Out” there is the history to what got you here. Step #3 says “Dining Out.” Click on that. It will give you some areas to choose from, if you choose one of those options, you will find various lists.

  • JEN

incomplete report…the list please..lol.. hope Olive garden made it to the healthy list.

  • Russell

Very Bad connection: “stay on the subject”would be good advise for you to follow. Why make it so hard to get to what your subject is about.

  • Juana

The website itself is the only thing worse than the actual ratings. Shame on MSNBC for wasting our time putting this on their home page.

  • Alan B.

Why cant they just post the actual list somwhere obvious. This is completly retarded. Why even bother writing the article, much less doing the “study”. I hope someone loses there job.

  • mandy

It is obvious that a number of people are having issues getting to the article with the list. I also can’t seem to get to it and then came across all these other people with the same issue. Is this necessary? What’s the deal? It seems like good information but nobody can get it. Not cool.

  • Kim

The link is in the first paragraph. You can either click on the “Sit Down” or “Fast Food” that are underlined in blue and they will take you to the list of restaurants. I was pleased to see my favorite Chipotle listed!

  • Cathy

Can you please post the list of restaurants that you refer to in the article ? thank you !

  • Cathy

Can you please post the list of restaurants that you refer to in the article ? Thank you !

  • Dana

    great site.
but none of the places are told
    =/

  • randal

This is a horrible article, did a high school freshman write this? I could do better on my lunch break. Keep spilling this dribble and you will make sure no one reads it anymore.

  • Mike

America’s Healthiest Restaurants – So, where’s the list guys? You need a new editor!

  • TomV

I enjoyed reading others comments that this site was a complete waste of time. Couldn’t agree more. Is there a link to the list?

  • Tim H

Admit it…..you omitted the resturants just so you could estimate how many people read your article…right?

  • Steve

You can tell who reads the comments and who doesn’t. At least 10 times in the comments someone said how to get to the list. Also, on the internet, usually when you run across blue letters it is a link. So, the blue letters that say 43 sit down, and 53 fast food, those are your links. Click on them in this here paragraph right above, and you shall find the promised land.

  • John

This site is terrible. MSN and this site need to do a better job of making information easy to find.

  • Nitza McD

    Okaaay .. . . . WHERE’S THE LIST?

  • lee

This is my first and last time visiting your web site -just a lot of nothing. A big waste of time.

  • Kev G
  • Jennifer

The lists are there… they just don’t look like “lists” per say. Hit the blue buttons above that say “sit down” or “fast-service chains”. It is like group panic on this page. You almost had me convinced I couldn’t find it but then I just figured I was distracted but all the comments wanting to know where the lists were.

  • sarah

I could not find the info regarding the rated restaurants – who has time to sit and search for an hour – not me. Your site is not helpful – just puts a lot of stress on one trying to find info.

  • Sean Comp

It would be great to see the list! I can’t seem to access it??? It’s like ging someone a menu cover with no food items listed inside. Arrrrggghh!!!!!

  • DAVID

TO ENGAGE THE LIST JUST CLICK ON TH E “SIT DOWN ” OR “FAST-SERVICE” LINK(S)

  • veronica

I agree..where’s the list? But anyone who is really concerned with eating healthy, should almost know the best choices when eating out.

  • Bruce

This website is a hack!! I don’t have the time nor the patience to click around a site to try and read an article that I find interesting. Your links waste everyone’s time, time is money…..Have you heard of this? You waste my time, you don’t get my money….

  • dianna

appreciate the validation that i am not crazy, no list found either

  • Karen

I am puzzled with some of the restaurants recommended by Health.com! I don’t agree with the recommendations.

  • Bob

    SO…where is the list????

  • Jana

like eveyrone else – can’t find your list.

  • Nancy

Is there a list? I can’t seem to find it either!!!

  • Nancy

  • Laura

    Where’s the list!????

  • Shauna

Everytime I get this far in one of your articles, I don’t ever see the answers, or the lists, or the rankings, etc., etc.,!!!! What’s up with that? Doesn’t anyone watch the website…does the web designer ever work?

  • Rick

    Donde esta el list????

  • Ray Andrews

Really, really wanted to know. Just hate systems like this.

  • Charles

You know what I love…..when you see what seems to be an interesting article..click on the link and the list is nowhere to be found or hidden or a pain in the butt to find. Good job guys! Whomever is responsible for your website….needs to be shot. They have failed in life.

  • Renee

Where is your list of 43 restaurants? I don’t feel like looking for “Waldo”. What were you thinking?

  • natalie

WOW you guys ALL OF YOU honestly couldn’t find the list………if your looking for the list of sit down restaurants then CLICK ON SIT DOWN….we have all had cocmputers long enough to recognize a LINK! as well if your looking for the fast food CLICK ON THAT! not rocket science people!

  • K Warwick

Looks like some of you need to go back to internet surfing 101. The HIGHLIGHTED blue letters are HOT LINKS DUH! You click on the words in the story and it will take you to the list. Learn to use the internet before you go off on a web site.

  • JEN

lol. rick, donde esta el lista y restaurante?… click the sit down or the fast food list…it took me a while to find it..

  • jr83

ok…so weres the list? this site is terrible at this

  • LISA

In the first paragraph, the underlined, blue printed words…”sit down” and “fast food chains”. Click on sit down for a list of sit down places…and fast food chains for that list.

  • JJones

Where is the list. This is terrible.

  • Nick

The links are in the paragraph :)

  • Dave

Where’s the list….all you people are the same, you just want us to look at your corporate sponsor ad’s.

  • Lacrecia

I am with everyone else, when I clicked on the home page saying “healthy resturants” I was expecting a list. I got nothing. Thanks for “nothing”

  • Q

  • Gabriel

what PHU-CK TA-RDS! All I wanted to see was the restaurants!

  • Al

After reading everyone’s comments I see that I am not the only one. I understand that this webpage needs sponsors but please do not make it so hard because we will just get out of here after trying so many web links unsucessfully.

  • no_one

  • Dawn Happy

Nice way to make me waste my time. Next time you say you have a list I won’t click on it. FALSE AD!

  • Sly Hill

  • Sam

If you don’t have the list, then don’t say it…don’t give us the runaround…

  • Robin

Might be good info. IF YOU COULD FIND IT!!!

  • confused

i really don’t understand how PANERA and CHIPOTLE can get on a list of ‘america’s heathiest restaurants’!!!!! PANERA’s food is HIGH CAL, HIGH FAT and HIGH SODIUM!!!! Their signature sandwiches range from 700-1070 calories and between 30-50 grams of fat!!! go look it up and you will see! that is not even including the chips and soda that come on the side. shame on the people that are providing the public with misleading information. these fast-food chains are NOT healthy!!!! whole grains and vegetables do not make fast food healthy when you end up eating food loaded with calories and fat. no matter how you look at it.

  • Nick

    blab;ah b;lah!

  • Mike

What a rip off. Promise a list and make you go searching all over for it!

  • DIANE

    WHERE IS THE LIST?

  • Tiffany

Okay, this is the third time I found something of interest and still didn’t get a listing of what was dicussed in the article. I like reading news on MSN, but if its going to be a hassle of finding information then don’t post it. :-S It’s just like seeing a delicious cupcake with white icing and sprinkles in a window and in turn its plastic. You owe me a cupcake!

  • Denise

Waste my 15min break so I can get the list…and no list!

  • Joyce

Like Rhonda said “OMG-the comments are funnier than looking at the food vedors. My suggestion is you all better get back to work instead of surfing the web if you are suppose to be working. Know how many companies monitor their employees on the internet! he-he. I did find the list 1st time.

  • Susan

Which one of these list not named America’s healthiest restaurants is actually the list you refer to as America’s healthiest restaurants in the article?
Slide Show: Best Casual Dining Spots
Slide Show: Shining Examples of Fast-Food Fare
Slide Show: 6 Independents Leading the Way

Seems a lot of readers are finding this confusing. Even the reply directed us back to a link that didn’t actually say America’s healthiest restaurants. I know you can mean the restaurants in
Best Casual Dining Spots. I worked for Denny’s for 18 years and all I can say is lard, oil, fat. Anyone can find an item or two anywhere if they are concerned, however, even though Denny’s offered low fat options, no one chose them. The best sellers are the fattest items.

What a waste of my time. Learn how to design a website.

  • like all the rest

You show a picture of Chipotle and then there is no list! I heard a rumor about they are a good place to eat with a lot of calories. I’s like to know if this is true it’s one of my favorites.

  • Susan

Sorry bout the 2 typos above, but I must say this as well. We had a team lunch at Mac Grill and there are 2 items on the menu under 1,000 calories; skinny chicken and ceasar salad with fat free dressing. The skinny chicken is grilled dry chicken with veggies for the same price as something with flavor.

  • Rick

Hey, Folks……..try clicking on “dining out” or “fast service..”. The lists are there!

  • Audie

    http://eating.health.com/2008/04/23/the-healthiest-places-for-you-to-eat-out/

Click the “sit down” and “fast-service chains” in the article. It took me straight there.

  • Swiss
  • Jw

How can you list Chipotle as the healthy option. Isn’t its fat content and calorie content off the chart. A simple burrito is a almost a daily calorie intake for an adult!

  • Catalina

Click the hyperlinks next to “Out of the 43 sit-down and 53 fast-service chains that we initially looked at,” SIT-DOWN and FAST-SERVICE CHAINS are links.

  • Judy

    Where’s the list???????

  • Joe King

This takes the cake for worst website ever. It’s all a sham to make you click and click looking for some real content. That’s so they get more for all the ads. What a rip! It serves the advertisers, not the readers. “Vital information with a human touch.” What a load of garbage!!!!

  • mike

“America’s Healthiest Restaurants” is on MSN’s home page. Never fails, click on any of these type stories and the reason for clicking is never there, or it is embedded in mutiple layers of links.

  • Antoinette

    LIST PLEASE………

  • Pink

To find the Restaurant Ratings click on “sit-down” and “fast-service chains” hyperlinks in the body of the article above.

  • Joe

    MSN is COMPLETE FLUFF.

  • blackcloud

To Fetal Scrapings: Yes, they do serve children, broiled over an open fire with steamed veggies YUM!!!

  • Phil

extremely poor web setup. Pitiful link options. Doesn’t take the reader to the heart of the info. Can NEVER get to the list of rankings. Waste of time. Where is YOUR quality control? All filler. No substance. Just like many of the fast food chains.

  • mike

this has to be a joke. where are the rankings?

  • Jordan

This is hilarious. I didn’t see a link to the list either. Definitely should have made it front and cener, considering it’s the whole point of the article.

  • yvette little

For once i would like to get to the story. I wanted to see the top 10 healthy restaurants and have not seen it yet. everything i click on leads to something but not that. oh well.

  • Joel

    Is this thing on?

  • Steve

a list is …. never mind, this article is worthless, I just wanted a list.

  • Diane

I think you should hire someone to double check your sites!! Spent alot of time looking for the ranking list and still couldn’t find it!

  • Lynne

couldn’t find a list of eateries to save my life. no links. what a mess

  • Joe

    Here’s my rank list…..
    Great Website

    Decent Website
    Bad Website
    THIS Website

  • Terri

This is insane!! I have looked everywhere for “The List” and I’m afraid it just does not exisit!! I became very excited when I saw Chipotle on the link, I wanted to send it to a friend…..but it’s all a lie!! There is no list!!! I have nothing to send to anyone!! This Sucks!!!

  • David

This article was a complete waste of time…. What in the world was it even about. Shape up or ship out I say…

  • Brandi

Ok, i am searching and can not find the link or any list of Healthiest Restaurants???? What is the deal here? I guess i shouldnt have been interested.. Oh well, waste of about 15 minutes.. Thanks..

  • Brandi
  • Travis

The people who did this article without the list were evidently not hired on merit or ability. Why, then, were they hired ???

  • Steve

You guys are idiots. Nice going. Great list I bet if anyone could find it.

  • robert

I’ll add another log to the fire. What list!

  • joel P. Gibbons

do you guys even prof read or test drive your site. and you wonder why you not # 1

  • Elke Collins

Does any one check these responses? People are telling you….we can’t find the list! I’m sure there is a way to make it much more simple.

  • Maxwell

Not worth proceeding, whole thing turned out to be an ad.

  • riptide

i found it in about 30 seconds the whole list is under article, and glad to see some favorties that i like

  • GandL

After looking and looking for the list i reached a conclusion ….. who cares? Its not worth the effort another wonderful example of American customer Service ….. bah

  • cheryl

I agree, the bait and switch is just a turn off. I will tell anyone not to waste their time reading your article and investigate on their own.

  • Jessica

List please …. this is annoying.

  • ed

    where’s the list????

  • Ms KP

The best and healthiest places to eat standing or setting IS “AT HOME!!!!”

    Duhhhhhhhhh

  • Jerry

What a waste of my time to try to see a list.

  • Stan Jose

You have got to be kidding….just how much money did this panel get paid from the listed establishments. Notwithstanding the “salad” place …none of the others have but one or two healthful items. After one looks at all the “fatted-up high sodium” selections…just walk out…get off you fat fannies & try cooking fresh….you’ll live longer.

  • Josh

Is this your first time on the net? right on top you will find the links. Eat at the Y for a healthy snack!!!

  • sharon

I also have had a hard time getting to the list! With all these negative comments, I would think that this could have been altered by now. I don’t have the time nor the desire to run thru all this to get to the topic.

  • penny

found the list. not helpful at all. only places in my area are denny’s and olive garden.

    are you all freakin’ kidding?

healthy? you can smell, see and hear the grease when you walk in!

  • Jan Kaszas

You do not list the usual common fast food restaurants in Northern Maine like McDonalds,
Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken. We don’t
have any of the “good” fast food restaurants
you list. Why not pick the best choice for
healthy eating from the popular fast food
    restaurants?

  • Ellen

This is so stupid..And you are educated..Where is the list? What a piece of crap..
