I agree that the Southbeach is not strictly Med Diet. Also the Sonoma book emphasis is on chicken/fish dishes. I have read most of the Med diet books and by far the most useful is "The Mediterranean Diet" by Coultier. It's also one of the least expensive. The emphasis is on vegetables and fruits along with healthy oils and nuts. Limited meat, poultry, fish. It also covers the other aspects of the med lifestyle such as family connections, activity and lowering stress.

"The Mediterranean Diet" by Cloutier and Adamson is an excellent, seminal work. It's a consistent popular seller at Amazon.com and bookstores for good reason: great recipes, historical and scientific background, and well-written. I highly recommend it as an introduction to the time-honored healthy Mediterranean diet.----- Steve Parker, M.D.

The Mediterranean diet, when followed correctly, is a delicious and very healthful way of eating. The two best online resources for information on Mediterranean eating principles are Oldways http://www.oldwayspt.org and MediterrAsian.com http://www.mediterrasian.com.

Good weight-loss books based on the Mediterranean diet are 1) The Advanced Mediterranean Diet by Steve Parker, M.D., and 2) The Sonoma Diet by Connie Gutterson, Ph.D. The July 17, 2008, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine showed the Mediterranean diet to be superior to low-fat diets, especially in women and diabetics. The South Beach Diet is not fully Mediterranean - it's more of a blend of Atkins and Mediterranean.

our main focus should be living and eating healthy. We know that vegetables and fruits, legumes, grains, nut and seeds should be apart of our daily menu.Meats we should only eat about 3-5 ounces daily.Fish is good for weight loss and make sure you are drinking enough water.

My husband's doctor put him on the South Beach diet so I bought the books and cookbooks. They have lots of recipes that are really good and we've changed our whole way of eating. There are a lot of the Mediterranean style foods used such as olives, fresh vegetables and fruits, and lean meats and fish. We really don't mind it at all once we were past the first two weeks, which was a little hard to get used to.
